PEEPLI LIVE: Political Parties try to encash the song for their political ends

Aamir Khan Production's PEEPLI LIVE before being released into India has already made waves. The waves that are being generated by PEEPLI LIVE are with relation to the song on the rising prices. It indeed is a sensitive issue with all the Indians and no wonder political parties are trying to patent it as their own song. After all, the slogan from SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE was adapted by one of the political parties to win the elections. Price rise being such a sensitive issue, if one has a readymade song at hand; it indeed could become the channel vehicle to political power.

More than 25 years ago Manoj Kumar had raised the issue of rising prices, and the song "Hi Mahangai", had given the nation a new voice in the form of Narendra Chanchal, apart from the fact that the incumbent government was voted out. PEEPLI LIVE's song has been sung by Raghubir Yadav and with the kind of rustic tone that he has, the song has full potential to catch the imagination of the public all across the country.

Aamir Khan has so far not agreed to allow the song of his film to be used for political gains. One thing is for sure, PEEPLI LIVE is a definite step forward to catch the feelings, trials and tribulations of the common man through the popular medium of commercial cinema and therefore Aamir Khan has used actors who still can carry the role of a common man with conviction and his idea of keeping the stars away from the film could turn out to be its USP.

Aamir Khan may not allow use of content from his film PEEPLI LIVE for political gains, but the issue of inflation is such that as and when the film releases, people would come up with their own versions of the song to use it for political mileage. The notion of copy rights does not exist in our country, and it could be in fitness of things, if Aamir Khan agrees to allow the song to be used for the betterment of the position of citizens of his country and his fans.

After all, cinema as a medium lives up to its true potential only when the common man identifies with the issues that it raises. PEEPLI LIVE is one such film after a really long time, and one only hopes that the powers to be would be able to do something to control the price rise and allow the common man to live a decent life.
